My mission is to help build victors from victims. To aid individuals in using the wooden blocks of their weighted pain as golden footstools that will enable them to reach, grab hold of, and relentlessly become their best selves. This occurs by the demonstration; inspiration; encouragement; motivation and assistance of finding strength in vulnerability and standing tall in one’s truth. Such truths shared through creative expression, using the fundamentals of poetry, spoken word, and emotionally-liberating exercises will empower viewers and participants, alike, during performances, workshops and residencies.
Every human is different. While there is harmony with the creative practices, there is a natural distinctness with the manner in which those practices are expressed. Still, there is an even greater separation; a sanctified singularity amongst artists who are celebrated for being masters of presence. They know how to be in the moment and are often described as having "it". Tia Smedley has "it". She is an atom bomb; a wonder. Making the biggest boom whether pouring from the cistern of her thoughts while writing; slicing ignorance with her truth-sharpened tongue while spitting poetry; weaving in and out of her character's emotions like a master seamstress in theatre; whether creating a curriculum for performing arts, teaching the curriculum, or simply infusing her speaking engagements with the wise oil reaped from the seed of life's crushing, the effects of her explosive passion affects nations, cultures, the unique individual.
Having shared the stage with trailblazers like Abiodun Oyewole of The Last Poets and opened for Grammy nominated artists such as: Mint Condition, Raheem DeVaughn, Dwele and a host of others, this mother of 3 wants her legacy to consist of more than her gifts, talents, opportunities and titles in her home or outside of it. The Tia Smedley desires to be known as a child of God, doing her portion of the divine work necessary to better the human experience.
